
Haralson County Republican Party Hosts 19th Annual Scholarship Dinner
On Saturday,
July 25th the Haralson County Republican Party hosted their 2015 Scholarship
Dinner in honor of recipients from our two County High Schools. Chairman Robert
Smith welcomed Bremen High School recipient Amelia Tochtrop and her family and
Haralson County High School Recipient Kristan Huey and her family. Along with
these two Scholarship Recipients more than 100 gathered as the Haralson County
Republican Party celebrated their 19th Annual Scholarship Dinner with Georgia
State School Superintendent Richard Woods as guest speaker. The crowd enjoyed a catered buffet style
dinner and dessert along with drawings for door prizes courtesy of the Haralson
County Republican Party.
Chairman Smith introduced each recipient and their family members and guest speaker Richard Woods and his wife. He also noted that Bremen High School Superintendent David Hicks and Haralson County High School Superintendent Jerry Bell was in attendance.
State School Superintendent Woods took the podium
to speak and present the scholarship awards. He spoke briefly on topics
of interest within his administration such as new programs being
implemented. He also stated that he believes school systems run better
when managed on a local level and that less testing and more teaching is needed to in the classrooms. Superintendent Woods shared some of his
college day stories with the recipients, some comical but mostly lessons he
learned from experiences while in college and ending in challenging them to
make the most of the opportunities ahead of them. In closing, on behalf
of the Haralson County Republican Party, Superintendent Woods presented Bremen
High School recipient Amelia Tochtrop and Haralson County High School Recipient
Kristan Huey with a $1,000 check to use towards their college education. Amelia will be attending University of Georgia
in studies to become a Veterinarian while Kristan will be entering Kennesaw
State University Nursing Program.
On behalf of U.S. Congressman Tom Graves, 14th District, Linda Liles presented Kristan and Amelia with a Resolution from the U.S. House of Representatives.
Georgia State Senator Bill Heath presented the recipients with a Resolution from the Georgia State Senate.
Georgia State House of Representatives Kevin Cooke and Trey Kelley presented Kristan and Amelia with a Resolution from the Georgia State House of Representatives.
In closing Linda Liles recognized Patty Saylor, mother of Paul Saylor who was fatally injured during his military tour of duty in Iraq. Paul was Bremen High School’s 2002 Haralson County Republican Party Scholarship recipient. Chairman Smith asked everyone to stand in a moment of silence remembering Paul and the 5 military victims who lost their lives on July 16th during the Chattanooga shootings. Following, Chairman Smith thanked all who supported the Scholarship Dinner with their attendance.
